Portzelky (New Year's Cookies) Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 pounds raisins
  • 3 Egg Yolks
  • 3 egg white (beaten)
  • 3 cups flour
Directions
Dissolve sugar in lukewarm water, and sprinkle over dry yeast. Combine, milk, water, salt, sugar, baking powder and raisins. Beat in egg yolks and sugar dissolved yeast. Stir in flour to make a heavy batter (rather stiff). Fold in beaten egg whites. Set in warm place until well risen (at least double in size). Drop by spoonfuls in hot oil (375°) or deep fryer. Fry until done inside and nicely golden on the outside.
