A common Italian heirloom variety of onion that is used to enhance the flavors in a variety of food dishes. Elongated in shape, the Torpedo onion or Italian Red Torpedo as it is also known, provides a delicate and mild flavor that is slighly sweet in taste. With a mild aroma, slices of this onion display light red accents on the ring edges, adding a nice appearance for use in fresh salads and sandwiches. Typically grown from 4 to 6 inches in length, the Red Torpedo is also used for pickling and as an ingredient for creamed onion dishes, soups and stews.
