Mom's Danish Pastries Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 cup scalded milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup solid shortening
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • ICING
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Orange juice
Directions
Stir together milk, sugar, shortening and salt until shortening has melted and sugar dissolved. When cool, stir in the yeast and water. Beat in eggs, lemon juice, vanilla and mace. Add flour--a little at a time, mixing until dough forms. Cover and let rise until double the original size. Roll out dough until as thin as possible. Work in 1 C. of butter, using 1/4 C. at a time, i.e., for each 1/4 C, fold dough in half and roll thin until all the butter is used up. (You will do this 4x total.) Let stand 20 minutes. Cut in strips and twist dough, tying in a pretzel configuration. Place on baking sheets and let rise until quite light. Bake at 400. Watch to make sure that they don't start to burn.

Icing: beat together butter and powdered sugar. Add orange juice a spoonful at a time until a stiff glaze forms. Top warm pastries with a spoonful and swirl to spread.
