China Chews Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup coconut, packed
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 egg yolks, beaten
Directions
Melt butter, add sugar and flour and blend well. Press on bottom and sides of 12" square pan. Bake for 15 minutes at 350°. Beat egg whites until stiff. Add 2 T brown sugar. Fold in beaten egg yolks. Add nuts, coconut and remaining brown sugar and stir. Spread coconut mixture over baked bottom. Return to oven and bake 25 minutes. Leave in oven with door open and heat turned off for 10 minutes after baking. Remove for oven ad let cool before cutting into squares.
