Servings: makes approximately 4 dozen
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups shortening
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 eggs
4 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
2 teaspoons cinnamon
4 cups flour
2 teaspoons butter - at room temperature
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
4 teaspoons milk - may need more to reach desired consistency

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar.
Add in the eggs one at a time until well blended.
Mix in the soda, molasses, salt, cinnamon, cloves and ginger until all is incorporated.
Slowly add the flour to the mixture.
Roll the dough into one inch balls and roll each into sugar to coat.
Place on cookie sheets two inches apart and bake in a 375° F preheated oven for 10 minutes.
Remove cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the butter, powdered sugar and milk until blended together and smooth.
Frost each cookie with the frosting and allow to set.
