A tradiitonal Irish bread that is made with three ingredients consisting of flour, buttermilk, and baking soda as the leavening agent. Although this bread has been adapted to be made with additional ingredients such as raisins and nuts, the traditional Irish Soda Bread remains the same with the three basic ingredients. Adding raisins to this bread changes the recipe into what is called a Spotted Dog or fruit bread. Irish soda bread will have the best flavor and texture on the day it is baked, so it is best to consume it shortly after being baked.
