Southern-Style Spicy Fried Shrimp Recipe

A delicious spicy fried shrimp with a Southern flare. This recipe, provided to us by Jenny from the Children's Cancer Center in New Jersey is perfect to add to your collection of shrimp and other seafood recipes. This recipe was found in Southern Foods at Answers.com.

  • 2 shrimp - medium
  • 1 hot sauce
  • 1 milk
  • 1 buttermilk
  • 2 flour - self rising
  • 1/4 cornmeal - self rising
  • 3 salt
  • 2 pepper
Container: Deep sided pot or a deep-fryer
  • Peel and devein the shrimp; set aside.
  • Heat the cooking oil to 375 degrees F.
  • While the oil is heating, combine the hot sauce, milk, and buttermilk in a bowl; stir until well mixed.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper; gently stir to combine evenly.
  • Dredge the prepared shrimp in the flour mixture. Shake off excess and then dip in the milk mixture; then dredge in the flour mixture again.
  • Place coated shrimp in the heated oil. Do not overcrowd the shrimp when cooking. Fry in small batches.
  • When shrimp are nicely browned, remove from oil and place on a paper towel lined platter to drain the excess oil.
  • Serve these southern style fried shrimp with a simple side, such as sweet potato fries or your favorite rice dish.
