Melon de Bourgogne

Most notably known as "Muscadet", however, Melon de Bourgogne is the proper name. A grape varietal, used in the production of white wine, originating in the Loire region of France. The grape is vinified as a 100% varietal wine. Appellations known for Muscadet production from lowest quality to highest quality are: Muscadet AC, Muscadet de Sévre-et-Maine AC, and Muscadet des Côteaux de la Loire AC (small amounts are available).

Also known as: Muscadet, Melon, and Melon de Bourgogne (proper name).

Characteristics: Produces light, clean, dry white wines that are tangy, crisp, refreshing, earthy and minerally. Lower quality Muscadet tends to be acidic and thin.

Ageing: Most Muscadet’s should be consumed young; exception is Muscadet’s labeled Sur Lie which can age for several years.

Serving temperature: Serve at a temperature of 50º-55º F.

Food pairing: Sushi with hirame or sole (melon Muscadet), oysters (melon Muscadet), spinach, poultry, and salads.
