Synonym of “closed-in” or “closed”. Descriptor for young wines (typically red) that do not freely disclose their character. Some refer to this as the "awkward phase", when the wine is just a few years old. Flavor and aromas are concealed temporarily. It is believed that further aging and exposure to air will bring out the hidden character.
