Crisscrossed strips of dough placed on top of a pie or a savory dish, as a decorative covering. It has open sections to display the contents of the baked food. This type of topping is often used instead of a full crust of dough so that the contents will have room to expand when baking, which may be a problem for some dough toppings that fully enclose the contents. When made for a pie, it is referred to as a lattice piecrust.

A creamy, cheesy cauliflower dish with a savory bacon topping. The cheesy cauliflower and bacon topping combine to create terrific flavor for this vegetable side dish.
Glazing and/or topping are often the final steps in bread making prior to baking the bread. Although glazes and toppings are often optional ingredients, they do add a boost of flavor and enhance the appearance of the bread.
