Today, I am going to show you how to clean a pumpkin. When selecting a pumpkin, make sure that you pick one that is fresh, that is free from any rot, and that the stem is intact. To begin with, make sure to lay down some newspaper onto your work surface that you are going to be cleaning your pumpkin on. This is going to make for easier clean up. The next step is to take a dark-colored crayon and draw around the top of your pumpkin. That is going to indicate where we want to cut in order to remove the top of the pumpkin. Using a sturdy knife, insert the tip of the knife along the line you created with the crayon, and begin by going around the pumpkin to cut the top off. Now, if you are going to use this pumpkin as a jack-o-lantern, try to cut the top at an angle so that the lid will sit on better when you are finished. Next, go ahead and remove the top of the pumpkin, and you are going to want to remove all these seeds, so just take your knife and make a nice cut along the bottom. The next step in cleaning your pumpkin is to remove all the seeds and the fibrous pulp that is inside. The best way to do this is just to get in there with your hands and loosen it all up and take it out. Once you have the majority of it out, you can use a spoon or sometimes a scraper comes in jack-o-lantern kits, so you scrape down the inside walls. Once you get the majority of the seeds removed from the inside of the pumpkin, go ahead and use your spoon and scrape up the sides of the pumpkin to remove all that pulp. That will get it good and clean. This is what the pumpkin will look like once you have removed all the seeds and fibrous pulp. Once you have cleaned your pumpkin, it is ready to carve into a jack-o-lantern or bake into a fresh pumpkin pie. For more information on pumpkins, visit RecipeTips.com.
