Wash and soak small red beans in a pot of water overnight to soften.
Drain and rinse; be sure there are no rocks in the beans.
Place beans in crock-pot; cover with water; cook on high for 4 hours.
Pour out half of the water.
Brown beef, onion, salt, and pepper; separate into small pieces.
Drain and set aside.
Stir into crock-pot ground beef, baking soda, juice, and tomato sauce.
Add chili powder, and cumin to crock-pot.
Heat to boiling and reduce heat.
Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
