Gingerbread Men (Swedish Cookies) Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 6 cups flour (fresh ground wheat)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions
Simmer molasses and shortening together for 15 minutes. Cream together sugar, egg and vanilla. Dissolve soda in hot water and add to sugar and egg. Add all this to molasses and shortening. Sift until flour is well mixed. Roll thin and cut with cookie cutter. Bake 10 minutes in 375° oven.

Note:This dough does not stick to board. Even children can handle it.

Makes about 36 large men.
