See steps below for how to prevent apples from turning brown by soaking in acidulated water.
- To acidulate the water use approximately 1/4 cup lemon juice or cider vinegar to 1 quart of cold water. If using lemons, the squeezed lemon can also be cut into slices and added to help acidulate the water. Juice from other citrus fruit can also be used, such as limes, oranges and grapefruit.
- Place the apple quarters or slices in the acidulated water.
- The lemon juice in the water wi11 help reduce the pH on the surface of the apple and the water will reduce the amount of oxygen it is exposed to.
- Do not over soak the apples. Do not allow them to soak for more than 15 minutes. Drain and pat dry before using.
