This versatile Powdered Sugar Frosting recipe can be made thick enough to use for detailed decorating and it can be easily thinned down to be used as a glaze. It works well for cake decorating, frosting cupcakes and brownies, and for decorating cookies.

When using this frosting recipe for decorating you can thin it slightly to create a smooth overall layer and then thicken it slightly for detailed decorating. Powdered Sugar Frosting is also easy to tint if you want to decorate with different colors. The surface of the Powdered Sugar Frosting will tend to get a little crusty if stored uncovered. To keep the frosting soft, store the frosted food in an airtight container at room temperature, unless the food item needs refrigeration; then store it in the refrigerator.

Powdered Sugar Frosting


  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • 1 tbsp. light corn syrup
  • 1 tbsp. softened butter
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Assemble all of the ingredients listed above in the recipe. Place all in a medium sized bowl and mix with a hand mixer until all is combined.

  • The frosting is ready after all ingredients have been incorporated. If the frosting is too thick, add a teaspoon of water until it reaches the desired consistency.

  • To tint for colored frosting, add a few drops of food coloring into the prepared frosting Use one drop for a light color and four or more drops if a darker color is desired.

  • Stir the food coloring in thoroughly to be sure that the frosting is colored evenly thoughout.

  • The Powdered Sugar Frosting works well as an overall white coating that can have other decorations added for color or to create a holiday theme.

  • This recipe works well for frosting sugar cookies, cup cakes and brownies and can be easily doubled if needed.
