Firm up ripe tomatoes by placing them in a bowl of cold salt water and leaving them sit overnight.
To first check if a peach is ripe, sniff the stem end of the peach. It should have a sweet peachy scent, if not it probably is not going to be very flavorful. Also avoid peaches with blemishes, bruises or green coloring.
A cantaloupe should smell fruity, not moldy or musty. When you squeeze the ends they should give slightly but not be wet or mushy. A definite yellow coloring is an indication that it is overripe.
