Besides checking the fragrance of the peach for that sweet peachy scent there are other things to look for when selecting peaches. See the tips below.
- The peaches should give slightly when squeezed with light pressure.
- Check for bruising and nice smooth skin, not wrinkled.
- A deep red coloring of the peach does not mean that it is riper than a lighter colored peach. The coloring is determined by the variety. A light gold to yellow undercolor at the stem end is more of an indication of ripeness.
- Definitely stay away from any peaches with any green coloring.
- Because peaches spoil easily, it is best to purchase only the quantity that will be consumed in a short time.
- If you do purchase peaches that are not quite ripe yet, store them at room temperature until ripened and then you can store them in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
