Test lunchbox food by packing food as you would on a school day. At your children's appropriate lunch time, check food temperature. Cold food should be 40 degrees F. or lower and hot food should be 140 degrees F. or higher.

Shown below are more tips on packing a lunch safely.
  • Be sure to wash your hands between handling different foods to eliminate cross contamination.
  • Use hot soapy water when cleaning hands and any utensils.
  • Be sure to store hot and cold foods in proper insulated containers.
  • Do not re-use plastic bags or wraps.
  • If making up sandwiches the night before be sure to refrigerate them until you are packing the lunchbox for school.
  • Play it safe by packing non-perishable foods, such as peanut butter, bread, nuts, cereal, pre-packaged fruit, dried fruit, unopened canned fruit, crackers, cookies, some cheeses, unopened pudding cups, whole fresh fruits and vegetables that have not been cut open, and unopened juices.
