To check if your leftovers are heated thoroughly, insert a table knife in the center of the dish and leave it for 15 to 30 seconds. Pull out and test on the back of your hand. If the knife is hot, the leftovers are hot.

This method of checking to see if leftovers are hot can be used if reheating in the microwave or the oven. Checking the temperature in this manner when reheating leftovers is quick and easy but for safety concerns your leftovers should be heated to 140 degrees F. when checked with a thermometer.
