A regional wine produced in the Rhône region of France. Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage are well known northern appelations of the Rhône that produce red wines. Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are well known southern appelations of the Rhône that produce red wines. Although the Rhône region does produce some white wines, it is best known for quality reds. Primary varieties in Rhône blends are Syrah, Grenache, Mourvédre, Cinsault, Viognier, Muscat, and Carignan.
Characteristics: Garnet in color, rich, complex wines, light in flavor with hints of berry and wood.
Ageing: Varies greatly, specific to the blend. Some should be drunk young, some develop favorably over a 2 year period, and others have great ageing potential of 5-10+ years.
Serving temperature: Varies greatly, specific to the blend. Serving temperatures range from 50º-65º F.
Food pairings: Beef, lamb, grilled/roasted poultry, chicken coq au vin, pork, game, duck with fruit glaze, and hard, firm cheeses.
