Tartlet

Other than being a smaller version of a Tart pastry, this food item is basically the same as a Tart or Tarte in appearance. A Tartlet, which may also be referred to as a Tartelette is considered to be the bite-sized version of the larger Tart. The Tartlet may be prepared either as individual small servings or a slightly larger but minature pie-like pastry that is also prepared as an individual serving. When numerous individual servings can be sliced from the whole pastry, it then becomes a Tart.

Formed to look like a shallow, round dish with an open top, a Tartlet may be made as a candy such as a chocolate Tartlet or a pastry with sweet or savory filling. When prepared, the Tartlet shell may be baked first (blind baked) and then filled or filled prior to baking so the ingredients that become the filling and shell around the filling bake at the same time. Tartlets are most often served as appetizers or small dessert servings.
