Russet or cinnamon gold in color, this variety of Pear is a relative to the French Comice Pear and may be referred to as a Taylor's Golden or simply the Gold Pear from New Zealand. Similar to the Comice Pear in appearance, the Gold Pear has a smooth outer skin that is thin and easily broken that covers a sweet white, juicy inner flesh which provides a pleasantly sweet aroma. When selecting Gold Pears, choose those that are not bruised and have a somewhat firm feel rather than too soft. In addition to being a good snacking fruit, the Gold Pear can be used for making jams, jellies, sauces, and added to baked goods such as pies, muffins, crepes, and pancakes. To ripen, place the Pears in a brown paper bag on a counter or shelf at room temperature. When stored in a refrigerator, keep refrigerated for only 1 to 3 days before using.
