A cantaloupe should smell fruity, not moldy or musty. When you squeeze the ends they should give slightly but not be wet or mushy. A definite yellow coloring is an indication that it is overripe.

Place an apple in a brown paper bag along with bananas, cantaloupe, tomatoes, or avocados to speed up their ripening. Apples give of ethylene gas, which speeds the ripening process.
