Kugel
A type of Jewish dish that can be served as a dessert when prepared with sweet ingredients or can be served as a side dish or entrée when prepared with savory ingredients. There are as many varieties of kugel as there are cooks. Both the sweet and savory varieties of kugel call for noodles as a main ingredient (although some recipes call for bread and flour rather than noodles). Most of the other ingredients are incorporated with the noodles to form a base, and several other ingredients may be placed on top prior to baking. In general terms, a kugel has the appearance of a casserole or a heavy pudding. Kugel is served on a number of Jewish holidays, but it has become so popular worldwide that it is also prepared as an everyday dish.
