Shoestring Potatoes

A short name commonly used to reference French-fried potatoes, the narrow potato product 3 to 4 inches in length and 1/4 inch square that is most often served in restaurants. Fries are deep-fried in vegetable oil and served with golden crusty outside texture while the inner texture is soft and white. French fries are not French in origin, but instead are referred to as French because of the way they are "Frenched" cut into thin strips. Very thin strips may be referred to as shoestring potatoes while the thicker strips are referred to as steak fries. In Britain, French fries are referred to as "chips" and in France as "pommes frites."
