A member of a family of pigments (carotenoids and anthocyanins are the other members) that is responsible for the coloration of fruits and plants. Chlorophyll creates the blue to green hues in fruits, vegetables, flowers, and leaves and is further separated into two categories, "chlorophyll a" and "chlorophyll b." Chlorophyll a creates the brighter hues of bluish-green, while chlorophyll b creates the olive hues. This pigment attracts the sun to produce carbohydrates through a process known as photosynthesis. During this process, the surrounding water and carbon dioxide are converted to sugar in the plant.
