Tarte Tatin
A well-known French upside-down fruit tart that is traditionally made with apples. It is made by covering the bottom of a baking dish with sugar and butter, and then the apples are added. On top of the apple layer, a pastry crust is added. When the tart is finished baking, it is turned bottom side up on a plate and the butter and sugar have created a caramelized topping for this dessert. As recipes have evolved over the years, the Tarte Tatin has become a dessert made with a variety of fruits such as peaches and pears, but the original creation was made with apples.
