A fruit that are pods from trees grown in the Orient, Mediterranean and Italy. The pods are flat, curved, leathery and brown with a purplish tint. The pods contain a sticky pulp and hard pea-like seeds. The pulp taste similar to chocolate and are used in manufacturing drinks and syrups, and for flavoring ice cream. The pulp is also dried and sold as a substitute for cocoa. It is also known as "locust" and "carob." St. John's Bread is available in the specialty section of the produce department in some supermarkets.
