Gooseberry
Gooseberry

A large berry native to Europe, related to the currant berries. It is still very common in Europe, but is much less common in the United States. There are several varieties that have either smooth or furry skins and range in color from yellow and green, which have a sharper flavor, to various colors of red or burgundy, which are sweeter in flavor. The ligher colored berries are often used for canning. Gooseberries are most often used for snacking, or jams, jellies, sauces, pies, and desserts such as Fool, a combination of whipped cream and puréed gooseberries.
