A small, magenta-colored berry with a tart flavor harvested from low growing shrubs that are commonly found in Great Britain and northern Europe. It is popular in jams, syrups, and desserts and may also be referred to as the huckleberry or blueberry, however, it is not the same berry. The huckleberry has a glossy blue skin that is thicker than the bilberry or blueberry with a tangier flavor. The blueberry, which has a similar appearance except for the crowned opening opposite the stem, is slightly larger than the bilberry and sweeter tasting. Instead of the crowned opening, the bilberry has a indented opening opposite the stem. The bilberry is a fruit that is also called a whortleberry, a blaeberry or a whinberry.
