A French word that designates an alcoholic drink served before a meal in order to stimulate the appetite. In Europe, the traditional aperitif is a wine based drink and usually served at room temperature. In the United States, an aperitif is now part of what is now often referred to as the cocktail hour and almost any type of drink may be served.
