Quick Apple Brown Betty - Recipe

Grease an 11x9-inch baking dish. Grease or the dish with cooking spray.

Sprinkle approximately 1/3 of the bread cubes over the bottom of the baking dish. Place 1/2 of the apples over the bread.

Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Put 1/2 of this sugar mixture over the apples. Layer 1/3 of bread and then the rest of the apples sprinkled with the rest of sugar mixture. Top with the remaining bread.

Splash the lemon juice and water over the top.

Cut the butter up in small chunks and place around on top of the apple casserole.

Bake covered at 350 for 30 minutes.

Remove cover and bake an additional 15 minutes. This dish can be served hot or cold.

-2 cups coarse day-old bread, cubed
-6 cups baking apples (tart like Granny Smith)
-1/2 cup sugar
-1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
-1/4 teaspoon salt
-3 tablespoons lemon juice
-1/4 cup water
-2 tablespoons butter or margarine
