Cream butter with brown sugar. Add egg and molasses; beat well. In a separate bowl, sift flour, soda, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. Add alternatively with buttermilk to creamed mixture.
Pour into a greased 8 or 9 inch square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
Eat plain or topped with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or applesauce.
