Cake: Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs. Add small amount of food coloring to cocoa to make a paste. Add. Add rest of coloring to shortening mixture. Add buttermilk, alternating with flour and salt, starting and ending with flour. Add vanilla. Mix vinegar and soda and let foam. Fold into batter. Pour batter into two 8 or 9 inch greased floured cake pans. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
Frosting: Cook milk and flour until thick. Let cool. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla. Add cooked mixture to butter/sugar mixture, beating wel. Before frosting cake, split the 2 layers to make a four layer cake.
