Preheat oven to 300°. Grease and flour a tube pan. In a large bowl, combine butter, shortening and sugar; cream thoroughly. Beat in eggs, one at a time. In a separate bowl, sift all dry ingredients together. Alternately blend the dry ingredients and the milk & vanilla into the butter mixture, starting and ending with flour. When thoroughly mixed, stir in black walnuts. Pour into prepared tube pan; bake at 300° for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.
* This is a very large cake that improves with age in the refrigerator.
