Heat oven to 350°. Heat shortening over low heat until melted; remove from heat. Mix in brown sugar, egg and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients. Spread in greased square pa, 8" x 8" x 2". Bake 25 minutes. Cut into about 2" squares while warm.
***Brazil Nut Bars: Substitute 3/4 C. ground Brazil nuts for the nuts.
***Butterscotch-Date Brownies: Decrease vanilla to 1/2 tsp; stir in 1/2 C. snipped dates with the remaining ingredients.
