| | Directions | | Combine sugar, flour, and salt in a heavy saucepan; gradually stir in milk. Cook over MEDIUM heat, stirring constantly, until smooth and thickened. Gradually stir about 1/4 of the hot mixture into the eggs. Add to remaining hot mixture, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil; cook, stirring constantly, 2 to 3 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat; stir in almonds and vanilla. Cover and chill 1 to 2 hours. Yield: enough for one 3 layer cake. |
