Mix shortening and sugar, cream until smooth. Dissolve yeast in pint of warm milk. Add enough flour, approx. 1 1/2 cups, and stir well. Let rise in a warm place until bubbly and doubled in size. Add enough flour, approx. 3 cups to make stiff dough and knead several times until smooth. Form to desired shape and place in muffin pan. Let rise until double. Bake at 450° for 15 to 20 minutes. For onion rolls: add 1/8 cup instant dry onion flakes to the shortening and sugar batter.
