Cut onions into 1/2 in. slices. Separate into rings. Place in bowl; cover with ice water and soak for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, combine egg, 1 tablespoon cooking oil, water and lemon juice in a bowl. Mix well. Combine flour, salt and pepper into egg mixture until smooth. Drain onion rings into batter. In an electric skillet, heat 1 in. of oil to 375 degrees. Fry onion rings a few at a time for 1 to 2 minutes per side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
