Ham and Potato Chowder Recipe

Homemade potato chowder that is filled with vegetables. Hearty and delicious, this is perfect to warm you up on a cool night.

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1/2 cup carrots, sliced
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cups potatoes, peeled, diced
  • 1/2 cup celery, chopped
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup ham, diced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pepper

  • Add water to vegetables and simmer for 10 minutes in a soup pot or Dutch oven. Don't drain.
  • Make a white sauce from the margarine, flour and milk by first melting the margarine in a medium saucepan; then add the flour and mix together.
  • Pour in the milk and continue to heat until the mixture boils and thickens, stirring vigorously to get flour incorporated.
  • Remove from heat and stir in cheese.
  • Add this cheesy white sauce and the ham to the pot of vegetables and heat together.
