Grandma's Raisin Cookie Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 each allspice and nutmeg (1/4 teaspoon each)
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
Directions
Boil the raisins and water for 5 minutes--there should be 1/2 C. liquid left. Add baking soda to raisin mixture and cool. Mix shortening, salt and spices and gradually add sugar, creaming well. Add eggs and vanilla to raisin mixture, then add flour sifted with the baking powder, mix well. Stir in nuts and chill dough until stiff. Drop by teaspoonful on greased cookie sheet and bake in 400 oven for 10-12 minutes.
