Spicy Sweet Barbecue Sauce Recipe

A little spice from the hot pepper sauce, sweet from the brown sugar, and a whole lot of flavor from the Worcestershire and steak sauce. Perfect on chicken or ribs.

  • 2 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup onion, grated
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper, to taste

In medium saucepan, combine all ingredients.

Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 10 minutes.

"Grilled some chicken up and wanted to try some homemade barbecue sauce. This one was perfect. It was thin but had so much flavor! I put it on the chicken the last 5 minutes of cooking and then served it on the side, too. Kids loved it!"
