Baked Apples - Recipe |
| This simple, but delicious recipe is very flexible - make one or a dozen. Use nutmeg, allspice, or ginger instead of, or in addition to, the cinnamon. Use brown sugar or maple syrup in place of honey. Add nuts. Use cider or other fruit juice in place of water. Each variety of apple will bake differently. Try several to find a favorite. McIntosh or Granny Smith are good choices. | | | view recipe online: http://www.recipetips.com/recipe-cards/t--1985/baked-apples.asp |
 | | | Directions |
- Preheat oven to 350°. (If the oven is being shared with other dishes which require a different temperature, the apples will bake well at 325° - 375°. The time will vary somewhat.)
- Scrub, but don't peel the apples (the skin helps them keep their shape and adds to the flavor - and the fiber.). Using a small sharp knife, a melon baller, or a small spoon, work from the stem end to remove the core. Don't go through to the bottom; leave about 1/2 inch.
- Using a sharp knife, cutting just through the skin make a cut around the 'equator,' and then make a series of cuts, 1/2" or less apart, from top to bottom all around the apple.
- Put apples into a baking dish that will hold them snugly, or into individual ramikins. Mix together the honey, butter, cinnamon and salt. Spoon into apple centers. Add water to cover about 1/3 of the apples and bake until tender, 30 - 60 minutes. Time will vary with the size and variety of apple.
- Serve warm or room temperature, topped if desired, with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
