Ingredients
- 1/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 3 pounds cooking apples* (10 to 12 medium size)
- water
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ( or adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional) 
 
This is a recipe that doubles easily and freezes well.
 
Directions
  • Peel, core and slice apples.
  • Add 1/2 inch of water to large sauce pan, then add
    apples.
  • Cook over medium heat until apples become soft. Add cinnamon and vanilla. Cook until

consistency is as desired, either chunky or smooth textured.
  • Remove from heat, add sugar and
    stir until dissolved. Depending on the sweet or tartness of the apples, adjust the amount of
    sugar to taste.
  • Serve warm or chilled.
  • The texture of the sauce will often depend on
    the variety of apple, some cook up softer than others, providing a smoother textured sauce. For
    smoother apple sauce if it is too chunky, place sauce in blender or a food processor and blend
    until desired consistency.
