A thick soup that may appear similar to a chowder, containing a larger proportion of solid ingredients and a smaller amount of liquid broth. However, it can be made either way, with larger proportions of broth if desired. Split Pea and Ham is typically made with cooked vegetables such as dried split peas, celery, potatoes, and carrots combined with ham and/or bacon that are all mixed into a thick, green pea flavored broth. This soup is often considered to be a "hearty" type of soup.
