Any variety of wine with an alcohol content that ranges between 14% and 24%, or that has a high-alcohol content that occurs naturally. This wine will generally be sweet in flavor and smooth in taste. Grapes for dessert wines have been grown and processed so the sugars are concentrated in the grape enabling a higher level of alcohol and sweet flavor. When serving, choose heavier bodied wines for winter meals and lighter bodied wines for summer meals. Typical dessert wines include: Cream sherry, sherry, Madeira, Marsala, Port, and Vermouth.
