Stromboli

A type of sandwich that is traditionally made with pizza dough, thin sliced meats such as pepperoni, genoa salami and capocollo, combined with cheeses such as mozzarella and provolone. A stromboli is typically prepared in Italian delis with a dough that is rolled out, layered with meat and cheese, then rolled and enclosed so the meat and cheese are encased in the dough as it seals the contents to blend their flavors together. It is a very dense sandwich with the ingredients tightly layered together. A tomato sauce can be served over warmed stromboli or it can be eaten out of hand as sliced sections or as larger portions. This sandwich has some similarities to a calzone.
