Goût de terroir

Descriptor of wine. Suggests that the wine exhibits characteristics "of the earth" in which it was grown and possesses the flavors derived from the grapes. An example would be those Rieslings of Germany that are described as being “slatey", a reflection of the slate that is present in the soils of German vineyards.
