In the United States, a term referring to a non-sparkling white or red wine with a minimum of 7 percent alcohol and a maximum of 14 percent alcohol. The wine is not fortified (brandy or other spirits added) and is typically intended for an accompaniment to a meal. The term does not define the quality of the wine.
