A kitchen tool used for making waffles. The waffle iron basically consists of two irons forming a top and bottom, each with a honeycomb pattern that is hinged together. The batter is poured onto bottom iron and the top iron is then closed down onto the batter, sealing the batter into the iron. The manual type is a stovetop iron, which must be turned at least once so that both sides of the waffle can cook. Electric models have heating elements on both top and bottom irons to allow the waffle to cook more evenly. Waffle irons can be purchased in a number of shapes including, square, rectangular, round, or patterns, such as heart shapes.
